8/7/1998: Flathead R., M. Fk., Moccasin Creek to West Glacier

| In the morning I put Bobbi on an Amtrak train home (the train conveniently stopped right there in West Glacier). I would carry her boat and her camping gear with me for the rest of my trip. I paddled the Middle Fork of the Flathead with Roger's group. This was almost the end of my third week out, and it was the end of what might be termed the middle portion of my trip, the time I spent with Corbett and the group he led. Most of them started home directly from the takeout. From the takeout I left Glacier by way of the magnificent Going-to-the-Sun Highway, and got onto US-89 southward to I-15. In the last of the gloaming I could tell I was missing some beautiful scenery between Great Falls and Helena where I-15 followed the Missouri River through a tight gorge, but I kept driving because there were a lot of places I wanted to go before catching up with Chris Kelly in Colorado a week later. Just north of Butte (exit 138), well after dark, I got off onto FR-7815 into the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. I drove up along Nez Perce Creek to a wide spot in the road that was clearly a popular parking spot for local outdoorspeople. I wouldn't know what a beautiful spot it was until I got up the next morning. 373 miles |
