7/30/2000: Blackfoot R. ID, Paradise Road to Trail Creek Rd.

With: Jon Hitchings, Karen Egbert, Steve Culy
Our splinter group headed west over the Teton Pass into Idaho and paddled part of the Blackfoot River. The section was listed as a Class III stretch in the guidebook, but we saw nothing greater than Class II. We paddled flat water between cattle grazing on the adjacent rangeland until we entered the Class II canyon stretch, where saw wrecked canoes, rafts, and jonboats. We called this section "the Deadboat Canyon of the Cowpiss River."

To make the day even uglier, we encountered a brushfire burning on both sides of the river from about 1/4 of the way in nearly to the takeout. By the time we finished and went to retrieve our put-in vehicle we had to keep out of the way of fire-fighting equipment on the narrow dirt roads.

Afterwards we drove north, eating dinner at a spiffy trout-casters' restaurant in Island Park, and sleeping in a nondescript bit of BLM land (on which someone obviously held a grazing lease!)
