7/31/2000: Madison R., Pullout above powerhouse to MT-84 access

| We paddled the Beartrap Canyon section of the Madison River, between Ennis Lake and MT-84. This is a beautiful, isolated run. You put on just below the power plant below the outlet of Ennis Lake and have two strong Class-III rapids before the long Class-IV Kitchen Sink Rapid. Steve had a bad pin at the bottom of the Kitchen Sink, but managed to exit his boat as Karen and I were getting a rope to him. Fortunately for Steve's composure, below Kitchen Sink, which is about halfway through the run, the river becomes flat and peaceful, but still incredibly scenic. We drove to Bozeman and ate fast-food for dinner, but then Steve didn't feel up to the rough camping we had been doing; he wanted a hot shower and a civilized environment, so we went to a KOA in Bozeman Hot Springs. Jon and Karen and I looked at the wall-to-wall Retirement Vehicles and decided that the attracions of civilization escaped us, so we drove up Little Bear Creek Road into the Gallatin National Forest, just south of Gallatin Gateway. |
