7/22/2006: Stillwater R., Moraine access to Cliff Swallow access

With: Jon Hitchings, Karen Egbert, Gisela Padmali, Bernie Culpepper
We paddled the Stillwater river from Moraine to Cliff Swallow. The level was 1160 cfs on the Absarokee gauge, but we had probably half that actual volume, as far upstream as we were.

We had to follow Stillwater Road back to Absarokee, then from Absarokee we took MT-78 south to Red Lodge (where we stopped for groceries and where Bernie did some more souvenir shopping) and got on US-212 westbound.

This was the utterly stunning Beartooth Highway, a 10,000'+ high roadway across the Bearthooth Mountains. We camped in the Soda Butte CG of the Gallatin National Forest about two miles east of Cooke City, MT and about six miles east of Yellowstone.
