7/16/2010: Arkansas R., F Street, Salida, to Rincon access

| The put-in at the F Street Bridge (actually, at the end of G Street) was like a beachside boardwalk; trendy restaurants, a bike shop, a brewpub, and (we learned later in the day) a popular hangout for the young and/or athletic to get wet on a hot summer day, swimming or kayaking in the artificial rodeo holes, and for people to just sit on the riverside watching. We also ran into my friend Chris Kelly, one of my favorite boating buddies, who, with his wife Nanette, has bought their future retirement home in Salida. This was one of the easiest stretches we ran during the trip, but it was quite beautiful and we were largely undisturbed by the adjacent US-50. Halfway down the river we were intercepted by David Jacobs who had arrived late due to an emergency at home just as he had gotten 200 miles out of Houston the previous Saturday. We began referring to David Bernard as Virginia Dave, David Vezzetti as Georgia Dave, and David Jacobs as Texas Dave. Later we would be joined by Kelly's friend Missouri Dave. Whitewater was easy on this stretch but just before the take-out there was a nice narrows with some swirly water to make things interesting. We all went back and ate an early dinner at "The Boathouse", a brewpub that served a bottomless glass of delicious lemonade, and every one of us was thinking that Chris had made a very wise choice of town to retire to. Afterwards we scouted out the trailhead to Mt. Princeton, the nearest of the 14ers, which David wanted to hike the next day. Lee, Kathy, and Jim ran the Numbers with Larry Rice, and took off for home from the takeout, and several others of the Houston Canoe Club also left for home. |
