7/17/2010: Arkansas R., Milk Run: Buena Vista to Fisherman's Bridge

	David packed his backpack for his overnight walk up Mount Princeton, and I was going to leave camp early to drop him at the trailhead, but once again Dick Swomley helped us out with a handsome shuttle offer, since Dick was leaving for Durango to visit his daughter for the weekend (and what a spectacular drive that is, particularly the stretch from Montrose to Durango). The remaining eight of us dropped Donna and Bill's car at a rafting company named Whitewater Aware, at Johnson Village where US-24/285 crosses the river, and we drove to the Elephant Rock USFS access, 100 yards downstream of Frog Rock Rapid, which had killed again (a young female raft guide) a week earlier. This was a continuous and entertaining Class II run (including the Class II+ House Rock Rapid) down to the Buena Vista Town Park, but after the Park the character changed to pool-and-drop Class III for the first two-miles of The Milk Run. We were held up for fifteen minutes above the longest and most complex rapid while the guides of a Whitewater Aware trip had lines across the river getting one of their rafts unpinned. This was a fine short Class III run, more like some Eastern runs that we are used to (say, a slightly easier Big Laurel Creek, without the French Broad paddle-out). Mick and I went browsing at Colorado Kayak Supply, got ice cream at a funky little restaurant named "Punky's", and went back to camp where I had a pizza from the KOA cookshack.
