7/22/2010: Taylor R., Crystal Creek access to South Bank access

With: David Bernard, Mick Schlotfeldt, Bill Grimes, Dorothy Vezzetti, David Vezzetti, Cliff Peery, David Jacobs, Chris Kelly, Neil Grossman

The Taylor is an Alpine stream flowing through green woodland, unlike anything else we boated on this trip. Overall the short stretch we did (about five miles) is mostly Class II, but the first mile or so was a continuous Class III with one or two other Class III stretches farther down. Most of the river is protected by the surrounding Gunnison NF but there are several stretches of private inholdings with vacation and/or retirement homes that degrade the quality of the river experience.

Chris drove over from Salida and we were also joined by Neil, a former Appalachian Mountain Club paddler who has retired to Gunnison, who had seen some of us in town the evening before and asked to join us since there are so few open boaters in Colorado.

After boating, David, Mick and I went into town to browse the visitors' center and stroll Main Street, then the whole group met for dinner at an upscale Italian restaurant named "Garlic Mike's".
