4/14/2017, Potomac R., N Fork S Branch: Hopeville Canyon; WV-28: Dolly Town Rd to Jordan Rd

With: Tom McCloud, Bob Kimmel

We waited at Yokum's store in Seneca Rocks, where we were joined by Bob, who showed up on the dot at the appointed time, 10:00 AM.

We drove about five miles north on WV-55 and unloaded and changed clothes at a graveled pull-out opposite Dolly Town Road, left Bob there watching the boats, and dropped my van down at the takeout at the graveled parking area opposite Jordan Run Road, at the end of what Tom knows as Harmon's Pool.

I had only run Hopeville Canyon once before, 18 or 19 years ago, and it was the first time Tom had run it since a landslide created a new rapid a year or so ago, so we had some exploring to look forward to. At 450 CFS, it was a low-water day, but everything was completely runnable, at almost exactly the Class II/III difficulty as rated by American Whitewater.

The new rapid and the last rapid, just above the takeout, were the only rapids that approached Class III. We had a fairly decent dinner in Mallow's Roadside Café about four miles west of Petersburg, and later Dick Swomley joined us and shared a campsite with Bob.
