4/16/2017, Potomac R., S Branch: Lower Smokehole

With: Tom McCloud, Bob Kimmel, Dick Swomley, Barb Franco, Lee Keller

Barb and Lee met us with their tandem canoe at the Petersburg town park where US-220 crosses the river. We loaded all four canoes atop my van, and put Dick's kayak in the back, since everyone but Tom and I would be heading back east at the end of the day, and this way everyone but I would have his vehicle at the take-out. A trip back to the put-in would have cost them an additional two hours, whereas Tom and I could camp at the put-in at Big Bend campground.

We drove to Big Bend and put on. This river was a little tamer, essentially Class II, with one Class III- rapid (Landslide) which was exciting for Bob, since his paddle snapped in two between the second and third drops!

Again, we had partial sun all day long, and occasional headwinds which never lasted too long. This was probably the absolute minimum level for this run, but there were only a few scratchy spots and the larger rapids were pretty well channelized. There were bigger rapids near tthe end, after we gained the extra water from the North Fork. At the end of the day we loaded Tom's boat and mine on his camper to go retrieve my van, and everyone else hit the highway for home.
