1/11/2019, Locust Fork Black Warrior River: 78/231 bridge to Swann Covered Bridge

With: David Bernard

The boats were now on my van, which could not fit under the covered bridge, and there is no place to turn around on the east side, so we had to take a long detour to approach from the west to drop off David's truck.

We started a bit earlier because this was a slightly longer run -- still under six miles, though --and it was slightly cooler and partly cloudy. I would rate this stretch of the Locust Fork a solid Class III, because there must have been a half-dozen rapids equivalent to Lesser Wesser. Everything but one (DoubleTrouble) was boat-scoutable, and even that one would have been read-and-run in a decked boat. As it was there was a clean, dry line for open boats, but even an intermediate canoeist might have had trouble hitting that line, so I call this rapid Class III+.

Even with boats David's truck could fit under the covered bridge's roof, so it was a quick drive back to the put-in to get my van, then we dropped David's truck back in camp and went back to Gardendale to Jim 'n' Nick's BBQ. It was better than Top hat, but not as good as the Sonny's chain in Florida, or as several I know in North Carolina.
